Integrating Video Surveillance and Iris Biometrics

Video surveillance technologies are maturing to meet the expanding demands of the market. Developments in biometric technology are also gathering pace finding applications within identity management solutions.

In the context of video surveillance, the most relevant questions are:

• ‘Where are the people in the scene?’ (location tracking) and
• ‘Who are the people in the scene?’ (identity tracking).

At present, the technologies for location tracking (through intelligent video surveillance) and identity tracking (through biometrics) are evolving in isolation.

Through the release of Eagle-Eyes, Retica is introducing a system at the crossroads between video surveillance and biometrics. Successfully coupling new video surveillance algorithms with an industry leading biometric acquisition system, we have introduced a system that can be integrated with existing surveillance solutions or used as a biometric capture system for physical/logical access in a less constrained setting.

Eagle-Eyes is a long-range multi-biometric system that improves on existing iris acquisition approaches in terms of stand-off distance, capture volume and subject motion. It is capable of acquiring face and iris images from multiple humans present within a scene. The system uses multiple cameras with hierarchically-ordered fields of views, a highly precise pan-tilt unit (PTU) and a long focal length zoom lens. Eagle-Eyes is driven by innovative algorithms that perform wide-area video surveillance, object detection and tracking, precision pointing and face and dual iris acquisition.

The Eagle-Eyes SDK is used to integrate Eagle-Eyes with client applications. The powerful API provides real time video analytics together with live face and iris image acquisition. The Eagle-Eyes SDK can be combined with Rapid-Match™, an API for our proprietary iris encoding and matching algorithms, and the Mobile-Eyes™ SDK [link to Mobile-Eyes page], an API for Retica’s dual iris capture device, for a complete identity management solution.
